What is the best way to use tea tree oil for acne?

I picked up a small bottle of tea tree oil at the drug store because I heard that it's great for acne. How do I use it? Instructions say to apply it to the skin, so should I just do that with a cotton paid or something? And how about oral ingestion?What is the best way to use tea tree oil for acne?
I apply it directly to my skin with a cotton ball but it has a really weird smell so i put it on at night and leave it overnight while i sleep so no one has to smell it.
